The first programmable computer was created at the University of Pennsylvania during World War II as a 'top secret' project.  The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was made public in 1946 and it amazed the world that a room full of electric wires could compute difficult math problems in breathtaking speed.
